#TACTIX :: Healthy resolutions that you can make AND keep for 2022

Here comes the countdown to 2022! And here comes the annual lists of resolutions that that we will make and break within a month. Sigh…the reality is that by the time February comes around, nearly 80% of people give up on their “list.”  We make resolutions mostly with the idea of self-improvement – we try break bad habits or realize we are not at our ideal body type or weight limit. Maybe we have been eating too many snacks, watching too much TV, or binging on social media. The beginning of the new year is our way of saying, “let’s start over.” So, let’s find some healthy resolutions to make and keep for 2022.

Make one healthy resolution simple

Drink an extra 16 ounces of water daily. Get yourself a flask or bottle that holds exactly 16 ounces. Just finish it within the day. Hydration is important and meeting your daily fluid needs tends to be a major nutrition challenge. If you drink juices, sodas or other sugar-sweetened beverages, swap one (or all!) of these for water.

Make your resolutions achievable

Your resolutions need to have a clear goal and produce a result. Schedule a vegetarian meal one or two days a week. You can even add an extra fruit and vegetable to your daily plan. Maybe throw some carrot sticks in a plastic bag or bowl on your desk to snack on.

Increase your step count or start one

If you don’t have one on your phone, download a step counter app.  Most people choose the default goal of 10,000 steps a day. If you are new, you can start a little lower for January. Then, increase it each month until you find yourself walking around a little more trying to hit that daily goal. That goes for those of you who have not moved the step goal for a long time.

Try a new exercise

Some of us get into a routine when we exercise. We hit the same pieces of equipment, keep the same settings on the treadmill, and follow the same weightlifting routine. Make a new resolution for a new exercise. Pick a piece of equipment you never use. You will find yourself a working a body part or muscle you’ve been neglecting and liking the results.

Make your exercising fun

Buy a music streaming account or a tablet. Create fun playlists on Spotify, Apply Music, or Pandora. Set your Ipad on the dashboard of your treadmill and watch a show or video while you walk or jog.

Do meditation

Meditation can have a great impact on your mental health. See the previous #Tactix article on meditation and add a few minutes of this into your daily routine to alleviate stress.
